"Cincinnati has never been as well equipped with musical writers
as Chicago, and its musical criticisms have been too largely reportorial until recent days. It has, however, possessed one notable exception to this in the person of John Smith Van Cleve, who was born in Maysville, Kentucky, October 30, 1851. Although Mr. Van Cleve is totally blind (having been so from his ninth year), this handicap has not prevented him from being very active in almost every department of practical music authorship and lectureship. His chief musical studies were made in Boston . For a time he was undecided between music and theology. His work in Cincinnati began in 1879, and he soon became musical critic of the Cincinnati Commercial under Murat Halstead . He was subsequently employed upon the News Journal of the same city, and did much work in Cincinnati in teaching. His strong literary tendencies made him not only a good writer, but an excellent lecturer on musical topics.

The lecture seems to be a peculiarly American institution. While in Europe it is possible, occasionally, to hear a good series of lectures on musical history in some college or conservatory, America has a constant running fire of public lectures and lecturers on musical topics. Possibly this form of teaching owes its vogue, if not its inception , to the great number of women's clubs which are found in the United States. One phase of the emancipation of woman has been the establishment of lecture courses and the reading of “papers,” and a goodly proportion of these papers or lectures is devoted to music.

Mr. Van Cleve left Cincinnati in 1897 and removed to Chicago, where he was as active as in the former city. But, in Cincinnati he was the chief musical writer ; in Chicago he was but one among several. He now resides in New York , and is still heard, both as lecturer and writer, in that city.
